Taiwan`s Top 2 Semiconductor Packagers to Raise Equipment Budget for 2010

Taipei, Oct. 28, 2009 (CENS)--With their upstream production clients in the semiconductor manufacturing industry seeing capacity utilization rates surge, Taiwan`s top semiconductor testing and packaging companies, namely Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. and Siliconware Precision Industries Co., have planned to raise their budgets on equipment procurement to US$400 million and US$250 million, respectively, for next year.

Taiwan`s largest semiconductor manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. has enjoyed an influx of contract orders from NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, Taxes Instruments, Marvell MediaTek and Realtek Semiconductor, with its production lines for 45/40-nanometer wafer manufacturing already fully booked. The firm projects its shipment of wafers to hit 2.2-2.3 million units in the third quarter of this year, and 2.3-2.4 million in the fourth quarter.

Also, United Microelectronics Corp. has enjoyed a flood of orders from Taxes Instruments, Qualcomm, Xilinx, Marvell and NVIDIA for 65/55-nanometer wafer manufacturing. The firm is expected to run at a capacity utilization rate of 84-86% and score shipment of up to 990,000 wafers in the third quarter, according to institutional investors.

Therefore, the strong demand for 65/55-nanometer and below wafer manufacturing has prompted testing and packaging companies to expand their capacity to fill orders from upstream manufacturers for wafer bumping, WLCSP (wafer level chip scale packaging) and mixed-signal integrated circuit and high-speed logic circuit testing.

Advanced Semiconductor, for example, has raised its capital expenditure from US$150 million to US$200 million for this year and planned to double the budget to US$400 million for next year, while Siliconware has also placed its orders for related equipment worth around US$250 million for 2010.
