Chip market headed for 30% growth year, says Cowan

LONDON - Strong global chip sales in the first quarter of 2010, as reported by the Semiconductor Industry Association, have led industry analyst Mike Cowan to predict 30.3 percent growth for the chip market in 2010.

Cowan uses a linear regression analysis (LRA) model and in March on the basis of January's sales that was predicting chip market growth of 39.6 percent in 2010. Cowan indicated then that the figure was likely to come down as the year progressed.

Cowan is now predicting second quarter sales of $70.76 billion, third quarter sales of $77.89 billion and a slight drop in the fourth quarter to $77.24 billion.
