Fabless revenue up 7%, GSA reports

Semiconductor revenue totaled $267.5 billion in 2007, with fabless and IDM revenue accounting for 20% and 80% of the semiconductor sales total, respectively, the Global Semiconductor Alliance reports.

Total 2007 revenue from fabless companies reached $53 billion, a 7% increase from 2006, according to the Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA).

The industry group, which focuses on the fabless ecosystem and was formerly known as the Fabless Semiconductor Association, reported Wednesday on funding and financial data for fabless, integrated device manufacturer (IDM), pure-play foundry, intellectual property, electronic design automation, design service, and back-end sectors, as well as initial public offering and merger and acquisition data for 2007

Semiconductor revenue totaled $267.5 billion in 2007, with fabless and IDM revenue accounting for 20% and 80% of the semiconductor sales total, respectively, GSA said

GSA further reported that 206 semiconductor companies (fabless, IDM, and suppliers) raised $2.7 billion in 2007.

Also according to GSA, the top 20 semiconductor companies by 2007 revenue accounted for $158.4 billion, or 58% of total semiconductor revenue.

The GSA is not the only market watcher to identify fabless companies as ones to watch. Recent research on 2007 semiconductor sales from iSuppli also pointed to fabless companies as some of the industry’s fastest growing players in terms of sales. ISuppli data showed that, with the exception of Sony, it was two fabless semiconductor suppliers -- Qualcomm and Nvidia -- that led the growth among the top-25 chip companies during 2007. According to iSuppli, Qualcomm saw revenue grow by more than 24% and Nvidia saw revenue grow by more than 34% year over year in 2007.
