Computer imports see revival signs
Our Bureau NEW DELHI

PC makers imported 1.76 million notebooks and desktops in the April-June quarter, 5.2% more than the previous quarter. These imports are based on orders placed by the PC retailers with the manufacturer.

IT research firm IDC India said the growth in PC imports is a clear sign of revival. But, PC imports reported 15.3% dip during the quarter when compared with same period a year ago. In the overall PC market (notebooks and desktops combined), HP retained the top spot with a market share of 17.8%, followed by HCL and Dell.

“Demand was buoyant in the April-June quarter on account of more demand from individual customers and educational institutions,” IDC India country manager Kapil Dev Singh said. He added that the Q-o-Q growth suggests that the recovery is definite.

As per IDC, the recently concluded elections disrupted government sector spending on PCs. With the new Central government settling down and the festive season starting earlier than usual, the vendors will get an opportunity to spruce up their shipments performance.

The quarter-on-quarter growth was highest in notebooks PC shipments at 7.2%, while desktop PC shipments rose 4.4%. The mini notebook PC segment saw the emergence of new entrants BenQ and Samsung, while existing players such as Acer, Asus and Lenovo moved to consolidate their positions. “With more vendors slated to enter this space and with the launch of Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS lined up for October 2009, the India mini notebook PC space could see a lot more traction in the forthcoming quarters,” said Sumanta Mukherjee, lead PC analyst, IDC India. While the small and medium enterprises segment responded positively during the second quarter, the large and very large enterprise segments are still waiting for cues of a sustained global economic recovery, as per IDC.
