Indian PC sales recover, grow 24% in last three months

NEW DELHI: The Indian PC market is on a recovery path. After witnessing a decline of 15% during April to June quarter earlier this year, the PC unit sales in the country regained momentum and grew by almost 24% during third quarter ending September, helped primarily by increased consumer buying.

According to the latest data released by research firm IDC on Thursday, HP continued to lead the Indian computer market with market share of about 17%, followed by Dell (11.3%) and Acer (11.1%).

“Overall consumer PC sales recorded a 28% growth quarter-on-quarter. This performance underlines a gradual recovery in the India PC market,”says Kapil Dev Singh, Country Manager, IDC India.

Dell, which lost its second position in the global PC market to Taiwanese computer maker Acer recently, was able to gain the second spot in the Indian PC market, overtaking Acer. HCL Infosystems, the third biggest PC maker in India, was pushed to the fourth spot, after Dell moved up.

“Dell used to have an aggressive advertising strategy earlier too. However it was not having much of an impact. Users in India want to touch the product before they buy it. The hybrid model is creating the pull factor for both them,” says Diptarup Chakraborty, Gartner’s IT analyst. The company’s India’s strategy to revamp its traditional ‘Direct2Dell’ model into a hybrid model, resulted in almost 80% jump in consumer PC sales, from last year, a top company official said.

“We have added five sales channels, for consumer sales. We have thousands of sales affiliates, (individuals who work like insurance agents, and sell Dell products door-to door. We have tie-ups with multi brand stores, mom and pop IT retail shops and also large format retailers like Chroma. We have also opened a large number of Dell exclusive showrooms,” says Mahesh Bhalla, GM consumer sales at Dell India.

The company now has over 5,000 retail points in India, revamped from its earlier legendary sales model, when consumers could only buy directly from Dell, through phone or internet. Dell opened its consumer sales channel in India six quarters back.

Overall, notebook sales grew at 46.4% quarter-on-quarter crossing the 7 lakh units sales mark.

In terms of desktop PC shipments, HP retained its top position followed by HCL and Acer. In terms of notebook PC shipments, HP was again number one followed by Dell and Acer.

Commercial PC shipments grew 21% quarter-on-quarter buoyed by sales to the government. Going forward, PC sales in India, will only pick up pace as enterprises look to refresh their IT systems with the new Windows 7 platform, and companies in US chalk out their budgets next quarter. The fourth quarter may see higher growth, as government departments will look to spend their unused budgets, before the new fiscal year begins.
