HYDERABAD: Xilinx, a $2-billion fabless semiconductor company, is developing 60 IP cores from its Hyderabad R&D centre, the biggest outside the U.S. The company has also created a software wing to support its product development activity.

Talking to presspersons here on Thursday, Senior Director of vertical markets of the company, Krishna Rangasayee, said the company was visualising big opportunities in India in the next five years in the areas of WiMax, IPTV, wireless technology and defence and aerospace.

The company was already engaged in talks with all the top ten players in these areas. The Hyderabad R&D centre’s focus was on automotives and handheld computers, among other things.

Xilinx specialised in filed programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) which could be used in multiple applications, respecting the IP of the companies that generated the original idea. FPGAs provided greater flexibility than that application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs).

Mr. Rangasayee made a presentation on digital convergence at a workshop on programmable solutions.

Mallik Loturi, Managing Director of Xilinx India, said the company would invest $75 million to partner companies in the region, though it did not want to take the major stake. The stake could be in the range of $500,000 to $10 million.
