Samsung unveils solar cellphone

New Delhi: Now you can charge your mobile phone even when there is no power and on the go - with sunlight. Samsung India introduced the world's first solar-powered mobile phone 'Solar Guru' which enables users to charge the battery anywhere the sun is shining, if they are in farflung areas where there is erratic or even no power supply.

"We have developed this phone keeping in mind the needs of the consumers, especially for people in areas where electric supply is unstable," JS Shin, president and CEO Samsung southwest Asia said. The phone will be launched in the market by mid-June under the company's low-cost 'Guru' series, at a price of Rs 2,799. Sunil Dutt country head Samsung mobile division said the phone has been developed for India and will be manufactured in India from next month at the Noida factory. Initially, the phone is being imported from Korea."

The phone has been developed based on consumer insights where a rural user can stay connected with family with a affordable mobile which withstands harsh rural environment and serves as an alternative to landlines, where electricity is a challenge.
